The first two weeks set the tone for a long employer–helper relationship. A little preparation at home reduces stress for everyone — especially if your helper is new to Singapore or your family routines are complex.
Accommodation
MOM requires acceptable accommodation with reasonable privacy and ventilation. Prepare a clean sleeping area with bedding, storage, and access to bathroom facilities. Show where she can keep personal belongings safely.
House rules in plain language
Write simple rules for visitors, phone use during work hours, kitchen hygiene, and child safety. If language is a barrier, use short written notes or pictures for key tasks.
Food and groceries
Stock basic groceries for the first week. Discuss dietary needs — both yours and hers — and agree how groceries and meals will work.
Children and elderly family
Share schedules, medication times, allergies, and emergency contacts. Introduce family members and explain who makes decisions about the helper’s daily tasks.
Safety and emergencies
Show fire exits, gas valves, first-aid kit, and how to call emergency services (999). Provide your mobile number and a backup contact.
First-week plan
Prioritise orientation over perfection. Tour the neighbourhood — market, MRT, clinic — and agree daily check-in times so questions are welcomed early.
